This is sculptural red bird mask from the Songye people of the Congo in Central Africa.  Has unusual form, with an embedded shell in the centre of its forehead.   The patina has a remnants red pigment.  Fringed by a raffia beard.  In good condition.  Some wear at the high points and in spots..  Made from a light weight wood.  Length of mask approx 40cm.  This mask might have been tribally used.  Stand not included.
